Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been teasing fans by talking about his eventual appearance into the DC Cinematic Universe as Anti-Hero and Shazam super villain, Black Adam. Johnson was rumoured to appear in the 2019 film Shazam! as a cameo appearance to set up that connection to this universe, but later it was decided by the film’s production studios to divide the narratives in order to focus on Black Adam’s origin story. Due for release late 2021, the fans still have very little information on the film in regards to who will appear in it, who is cast and what the film will be about.
Fast forward to 22nd of August 2020, and DC FanDome gives fans yet another incredible surprise as we get a glimpse at what Black Adam is all about, with an appearance from The Rock himself. Whilst there is no footage of the upcoming film yet, we got a motion comics style teaser that tells us the origin of Black Adam, and gives us some more information about what to expect in the film. With art by internet famous digital artist Boss Logic, the trailer gives us a glimpse of Black Adams home land of Kahndaq, as well as what to expect from the plot of the film.
Dwayne Johnson was later joined by Noah Centineo who has now been officially confirmed as the actor who will portray JSA member, Atom Smasher. Whilst there have been no other official cast reveals as of yet, we were given a taste of some of the characters we can expect that make up the rest of the JSA, such as Hawkman, Cyclone and Doctor Fate, with apparently some more yet to be revealed.
This is exciting, as we have seen television versions of the JSA on shows like DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and most recently Star Girl, but we have never had a film version of the JSA so this will be a first for DC Cinema.
With very little still known about this film, the future looks bright for more exciting news of casting choices and teasers once the film gets underway with production.
Finally, Dwayne Johnson also talked a little about other DC characters, including a possible hint at a crossover with Superman himself saying “maybe they’ll be friend…maybe not”.
Who would you like to see portray these members of the JSA?
